i don't really like either of the two books in my to-read pile (i think it's one of those things where i have to be in the mood to read them).
if you have any recommendations, please send them my way! free time is just around the corner and i will need plenty of books to get me through the chilly winter. :)

ReplyDeletehee! as you apparently know, anonymous poster, i do love pirates, but i'm not sure how riveting those tales would be . . .
ReplyDeleted'oh! t'was me. The Amazon review of the book actually makes it sound vaguely cool. I'm looking at a decidedly uncool book from the same seller (Perspectives on Canadian Population). (MIke)
ReplyDeleteI will take this opportunity to plug some of my favorite local writers (some of whom are friends, so some bias is involved):
ReplyDelete* Haven Kimmel's The Solace of Leaving Early
(and also her wonderfully heartbreaking children's book, Orville)
* Martha Witt's Broken as Things Are
* Clyde Edgerton's Lunch at the Piccadilly
* Sharlet & Manseau's Killing the Buddha : A Heretic's Bible [includes Randall Kenan, A.L. Kennedy, Haven Kimmel, others]
Also:
* Calvin Trillin's Tepper Isn't Going Out
* Connie Willis' Passage
* Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude
That should keep you busy for about a week ;)

What are the books you don't want to read?
ReplyDeletejohn: i've already read both of kimmel's novels, the trillin, and the garcia marquez--but since i loved all of those, i'll definitely check out your other recommendations. :)
ReplyDeletethe books i don't want to read are the second jasper fforde/thursday next book (my mom got it for me--i liked the first one well enough but never saw the need for sequels, and i can't stand how hard he tries to be clever) and the new book of short stories by james morrow (which makes me feel traitorous, and which i will probably pick back up and try again soon).
I just came across your site recently, so I'm not real familiar with your tastes, but the last few books I read and enjoyed include:
ReplyDeleteChitra Divakaruni's Arranged Marriage: Stories,
Augusten Burroughs' Running With Scissors,
Steinbeck's "East of Eden" (my first reading of it);
I'd enjoy reading your opinion of any of these.
i'm pretty sure i've read the steinbeck, but if i have, it was when i was like 15, so i guess i'm due for a rereading. :) i've heard good things about the other two so maybe i'll check them out. by the way, who are you? :)
ReplyDeleteSorry, I could only post anonymously, not being a member blogger. My name is Lynn, I'm in your INLS 102 class (we talked once about Lynda Barry) which is where I came across your site. I've been picking up reading ideas from your ever-growing list. Just wanted to contribute my recent favorties. :)
ReplyDeletehi lynn! thanks for the recommendations. :) (i'm much more inclined to follow them when i know who they're coming from!)
