2005 book 52

rick moody's the ice storm
blogger was down for fucking forever, so here's this entry that i really wrote at 6 pm when it was too fucking hot and i wasn't really concentrating:

yeah, this book was pretty riveting. it revolves around two dysfunctional couples in the 70s and their equally dysfunctional adolescent children, all experimenting with sex as they wallow in loneliness and confusion. i guess that doesn't really sound like a good story, but it is. it was made into a movie--i think i saw part of it on tv once, briefly was interested b/c it starred kevin kline and joan allen and tiny tobey maguire and katie holmes, but ultimately turned it off b/c they were all so self-indulgent and annoying. it doesn't really come off that way in the book--they're all sort of searching for meaning in tumultuous times, and don't really know what to do with themselves. i think i liked this better than moody's short stories, even.

is there some kind of fantastic four subplot in the book, or was that just the movie?

  4. oh, thanks for mentioning it--i meant to write about that, but was all hot and cranky and forgot. it is in the book, and i thought it was really well-done. sometimes writers who go for the comic book thing annoy me (*coughjonathanlethemcough*) but moody pulled it off nicely.
