tv on dvd

As many of you know, there are few things I enjoy more than watching tv shows on dvd (while I knit), especially when there's nothing else good on. Lately I've expanded this to include BBC miniseries (Cranford and Bleak House were both awesome), but to my delight, last year's shows are finally coming out on dvd so there's even more goodness in my Netflix queue! I finally caught up with Mad Men and it is SO GOOD! Though it's weird to see all the characters smoking all the time, even around their small children. What a different a few decades make.

So what awesome BBC dramas should I catch up on? What show(s) from last year should I catch on DVD? (Last's season's shows are an interesting dilemma; usually I buy all my faves and watch them over and over, but the only ones I'm buying for sure are Pushing Daisies and 30 Rock. MAYBE I'll get The Office, My Name is Earl, and HIMYM, but they were all less than stellar after the writers' strike.)

  1. I just started netflix again so I can watch Mad Men in preparation for the new season. I've never seen it, but I'm excited to catch up!

  3. We just started Doctor Who and I love it. Time travel and beans on toast jokes - does it get any better??

  4. I always hear that Dr Who is great and it seems like something I'd like, but where do I start? Hasn't it been on since the 70s? What season are you watching?

  5. We started with the new episodes that began in 2005. It seemed a little more manageable that way... Also, if you haven't watched the Prisoner, put that on your list! I have the complete series and it's also really good.

  7. Oooooh! I totally recommend Dr Who too! I watched the original series religiously since the 1980s, but this one is much improved.

The new series of Doctor Who that started with Christopher Eccleston kind of reboots the series. It's more fun if you know things from the original series, but completely not necessary.

The Torchwood spinoff series (2 seasons so far) was also pretty great. Darker and with some more adult themes -- but definately get through a few seasons of Who first for that (Captain Jack, a central character in Torchwood, originally turns up in Who and isn't the most likeable character ever, but then on Torchwood he's pretty awesome. Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who, too. hee hee!)
