Lisa Lutz’s Spellman Rising
OBVIOUSLY I could NOT wait to read my ARC of this book!!! Let me start with a little nitpick: over the years, I have noticed some continuity errors with these books, which I find a bit irksome but whatever (I do appreciate the author just straight up admitting to aging up a kid lol). But a large part of the plot of this one involves the ownership of the family PI business, which doesn’t at all match how things went down in the previous book. Maybe if I hadn’t reread that one just yesterday, it wouldn’t have bothered me? (Am I an outlier for regularly rereading books?) Anyway, aside from that one issue, it was a delight to spend time with these characters again, as they investigate tech bros, maybe-shady boyfriends, imposter couches, etc. We also get some Rae POV sections again, which is fun. Some twists and turns and a satisfying wrap-up—I was super psyched about all of it. Funny as ever, too. My fingers are crossed for more. A/A-.
