2026 book 124

 Kate Elliott’s His Conquering Sword

I LOVE THIS SERIES!!!! Not much else to say about the third volume in an awesome epic sci-fi/fantasy series, just lots of friendship and love and acting and battles and different cultures starting to mix and some very funny parts and some very sad parts and so many characters to root for. Seriously, this series is now a fave. A.

2018 book 148

Robin Stevens' First Class Murder
The third Wells and Won mystery is a loving homage to Murder on the Orient Express, as Daisy and Hazel are on said train with Hazel's father on a tour of Europe when a murder takes place! He's forbidden them from detective work, but with a bunch of VERY amateur detectives on board, how can they resist doing it right? Another funny and very clever mystery with characters that keep being awesome.

2016 book 193

Jordan Stratford's The Case of the Missing Moonstone
I borrowed this first book in the Wollstonecraft Detective Agency series (which features young Ada Lovelace and young Mary Shelley solving crimes together--an author's note does explain how this is historically inaccurate in every way, but sure) from a local almost-nine-year-old. She told me, "I solved the mystery pretty early on, so I bet you will too, but it's a good story anyway." Thank you for your confidence in my detective skills, local child! Anyway, she was right--the mystery is not at all hard to figure out, but this is a fairly enjoyable story--perhaps more for almost-nine-year-olds than thirtysomethings, though. Like as an adult, I thought it was creepy that Percy Shelley is the tutor of the girls here (Mary has been aged down, but he has not)--although their future marriage isn't mentioned, an adult obviously knows about it and can't help but be weirded out. I guess in the end (and because of the end!) I was more annoyed by the (many) historical inaccuracies than charmed by a pair of girl detectives. B.

2014 book 163

Mary E. Pearson's The Kiss of Deception
First of all, this title is TERRIBLE. Just getting that out of the way. Don't judge this by its terrible title. Actually, the description could go either way, too-- a princess, on the day she's supposed to marry a prince she's never even seen, runs away with her ladies' maid to make a new life for herself. Only the prince AND an assassin both come looking for her, leading to an inevitable love triangle. (This is the part of the description that worried me, but the material mostly rises above it.) Pearson does a clever thing here, not revealing which dude is which right away, which adds a layer of tension to the story. And it's a pretty solid princess-coming-of-age-and-learning-stuff story, for sure. There's also a whole thing with does she or doesn't she have a magical gift that looks like it'll come into play more in later volumes. I do wish the maid had become a POV character before the last 30 pages (it just feels awkward at that point, and she's interesting enough to have carried more of the story), but the other three balance each other pretty well. I mean, the assassin's motivations are dumb as hell, but it's still an entertaining read, and I really liked where it ended. I'll definitely be reading the next one. A-.

trashy book readalong!

As you may have seen on Twitter (it was even retweeted by the Fug Girls!), Christina and I are planning a read-along of THE trashy 80s books--the Scruples series--over the holidays. She loves them, and I have (embarrassingly) never read them, so now is the time! We'd love you any or all of you to join us in this quest!

We're gonna read Scruples for Thanksgiving week and the other two in December--let me know your preferred dates and I'll announce them here ASAP. In the past, I've posted an entry for discussion and we've chatted in the comments, and unless that doesn't work for anyone, we'll plan to do it the same way again.

Hooray trashy books!
