2016 book 51

Jenny T. Colgan's Resistance is Futile
This book was VERY silly, but also VERY fun. It's about a young woman, a mathematician,  who finds herself part of a group of elite colleagues working on a mysterious government project. At first I was like, is this gonna be like The Rosie Project meets Popco? But it goes somewhere entirely different (and slightly goofier). Parts of this are predictable, but I was super into the romance and liked the sense of humor a lot. And I really didn't see the end coming. I'll definitely be looking for more from Colgan. A-/B+.

2016 book 35

Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan's The Royal We
At first, I was worried about rereading this for FYA book club--would it be as good as I remembered? etc--but as soon as I started, I got completely sucked back in again and would have read the whole thing in one sitting if I hadn't had other plans! Anyway, the Fug Girls' take on Kate Middleton is super entertaining, only occasionally cheesy, and surprisingly action-packed! Good stuff!

I see that there is an edition with "a new bonus chapter"--anyone have the details on that?

2015 book 61

Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan's The Royal We
Look, if the Fug Girls are going to write a book inspired by Kate Middleton, I am THERE, ok? And this did not disappoint. They've created a more-or-less fictional version of the British royal family (all of whom are great and/or hilarious), and the royal bride in this case is a Midwestern girl who meets the prince while studying abroad at Oxford (they bond over a crappy supernatural tv show, naturally). And of course he has a playboy brother, and she has a twin sister who causes DRAMA. I actually really, really liked this. It was amazingly readable--I didn't want to put it down--and the writing is mostly really strong (there are a couple of slightly cheesy parts, but nothing too terrible). I loved both these characters and was psyched to see them together. Plus, since it's the Fug Girls, there is some great stuff about all the clothes, and a very sly sense of humor. Well done all around, a super fun and entertaining read. A-.

2014 book 248

Susan Elizabeth Phillips' Heroes Are My Weakness
I was in the mood to read something lighter, and this has gotten some pretty solid reviews, so I figured I'd branch out from my usual reading selections and check out something more on the romance/chick lit side. I will say that parts of it are a bit overwritten--I don't need to be reminded so many times that our protagonist was a shy, awkward child, or told multiple times who people are when I was /just/ told who they are a couple pages before, or read about Native Americans with their "carved cheekbones" (when did that trope start?). But that was all pretty minor, and the story itself is entertaining--it centers on a failed actress turned ventriloquist (that is so random and is entirely the reason I chose to read this) who returns to her late mother's Maine cottage to try and find a valuable item, and meanwhile the hunky dude next door she knew as a teenager (he was her stepbrother, but let's not dwell on that) is back, and he's still a huge jerk--OR IS HE???? Yeah, he kind of is, mainly b/c there's a bit of a Gothic/mystery element here. But it's ok, this book is still really funny (the puppet stuff is especially entertaining) and the romance is slow burning enough to be believable. Definitely entertaining stuff. B+.

2013 book 193

Shannon Hale's Austenland
I wanted to reread this before the movie comes out; unfortunately, it doesn't hold up as well as I'd hoped (I still think the movie will be hilarious though). It just requires a little too much suspension of disbelief for this bitter single thirty-something--but I'd still recommend it to people who like cute things and people who like Jane Austen. B.

2013 book 172

Marta Acosta's The She-Hulk Diaries
Guys! This book is LEGITIMATELY GOOD. I mean, I'm not one for chick lit--I hate how predictable it is--but it turns out I am way into chick lit when the chick is a superhero. Take note: Superhero Chick Lit needs to be a genre. Anyway. As you can probably tell by the title, the book is the diary of She-Hulk--or really her alter-ego, lawyer Jennifer Walters--as she makes some New Year's resolutions and tries to get her crazy life together. Soon she's involved in a big case and running into a hot ex, plus there are a bunch of other things going on--and all of it is HILARIOUS. Seriously, I loved the narrative voice so much that I might try and read something else by Acosta. It's been a long time since I read any She-Hulk (I think since the 90s comic) but this is pretty spot on, canon-wise, and fits really well into the current Marvel/Avengers universe. Oh, someone please put She-Hulk into an Avengers movie! She and Tony would banter so beautifully.

ANYWAY. This was a lot of fun, and much better than a Marvel novel might be expected to be. A-.

2012 book 148

Meg Cabot's Size 12 and Ready to Rock
I seriously HATE the titles of this series, especially compared to how much I enjoy reading them. (SERIOUSLY, why is the protagonist's weight her defining trait when she has so many more interesting things going on?) Former pop star turned residence hall assistant director Heather Wells is back in a really engaging story that almost hardly counts as a mystery (in that there's nothing really to be solved, but there is still tension and crime) but is still a ton of fun to read. Perfect summer reading. A-.

2012 book 17

Shannon Hale's Midnight in Austenland
I enjoyed Austenland quite a bit, so was eager to read this sequel/companion, where another woman goes on the Austen-themed vacation and meets a whole new cast of Austen-esque characters (with one memorable returnee from the previous book)--and was pleased that this one had a mystery thrown into the plot (a la Northanger Abbey). Look, these books are nice light reading and Hale's writing is really enjoyable--she really highlights the humor of the situations--so even though they're somewhat predictable, they're very likable. I know I tend to rail against the Austen spin-off industry, but these books are very well-done. A-/B+.
