etgar keret now has a column over at nextbook. (my favorite part is the bit with the kinder egg.)
i'm a big keret fan--i read a lot of his stories in hebrew for an independent study during college, and will never ever forget the one about the magician. or the ambulance driver. or . . . any of them. he also did the writing for one of the ongoing stories in the hanuka brothers' comic book bipolar, which i liked a lot. he's sort of the master of that surreal, dark, twisted short story, to me.

that story about his sister made me a little sad. i mean sure, it's upbeat, he still has a relationship with her, but she isn't allowed to hug him and has made a dozen babies, which is painted in a lovely light, but.....i don't know. i'm very conflicted about women and orthodox religion.
i know people whose son went on a trip to israel and came back "religious" and it always made me sad that he could no longer hug or touch any of his female relatives. i think of that whenever I greet my brother with a hug.
i was always under the impression from my shomer negiah (i.e., the ones who don't touch the opposite sex) acquaintances that it was still ok to touch family members--imagine not being able to hug your dad! i was rpetty surprised when i read keret's column and implied he couldn't give his sister a hug.
