audio culture

just got this really interesting book of essays at the music library. authors include brian eno, glenn gould, john zorn, chris cutler . . . and umberto eco?!

i found the sections on electronica and electronic "(re)production" to be most fascinating, but there are some other gems in there as well.

Eco writes about anything and everything (and I happily read it), so that's not a surprise. But I'm curious which Gould piece is reprinted in there. He was a fascinating guy. I like his solitude algorithm - that for every minute one spends with other people, a significantly large multiple of that time should be spent alone. (Preferably reading. :)

i had no idea eco wrote on music till today. awesome.

there's only one gould essay (several of the contributors have two or three) and it's called "the prospects of recording," from 1966.

Ok, I have that; it's in the Glenn Gould Reader, along with a few others on music and technology. Thanks! (I feel like this is Ask-a-Librarian sometimes. :)
