so, something seems to be wrong w/ my camera, and i'm hoping someone reading this can help. actually, the camera itself is working fine--but when i plug in the usb cord and try to upload the pictures, the usual happy beepy noise is multiplied and the message "the device is not ready" pops up. any thoughts? it was working fine the other day . . . i want to upload some pictures i took at the baby shower today (i only got a few before my battery died).

Try a different USB cord or a different USB port (they can fail).
Do you have a separate card reader? What type of card is it?

i don't have a separate card reader and i forget what kind of card it is . . . also, i can't try another usb cord b/c that's the only one i have that fits into my camera. maybe another port will work--i'll try that when i get home. thanks!
I agree with Alex on trying new cord/port ... mark has an Olympus--maybe his cord will work with your camera. You should e-mail me if you can't resolve this and I'll see if he'll lend you his cord.
Since your camera is an Olympus, I'm guessing it uses an XD card. So I think the least expensive card reader would be something like this:

The card will then just be like a removeable USB drive on your computer. I use my card reader all the time--save camera batteries and it's easier to carry to work than the camera cord.

thanks for the tip on the card reader--i didn't know they were so inexpensive. i also didn't realize uploading pictures eats camera batteries. how big are the card readers? my current usb cord is pretty small . . .

I'm glad you got it working with your camera, but I have to agree with Lisa B. that if you take any quantity of photos a card reader is well worth it. You can even use it to make the card into a portable storage device (like those USB keychain thingies) if you need one. --Sarah
