Correction to my previous snow post: the snow is actually level with my SECOND step! (I forgot there were three.)
I decided to pull on my rain boots and check things out--turns out rain boots are not a good substitute for snow boots! It was fun tromping around anyway--sometimes the icy-encrusted snow supported me, and sometimes I'd sink right through. Exciting!

I don't have rain boots *or* snow boots, so I got cold and wet feet yesterday when I went out in my tennies. You'd think that after 12 years here my wardrobe might be a little more complete, but I guess I often still think like a desert girl. So pardon my ignorance when I ask, what do snow boots do that rain boots are not good for?
Rain boots are waterproof for rain and puddles and things, but don't keep out the cold at all--if I'd worn a few pairs of extra socks I probably could have stayed out longer. Snow boots are more waterproof/rugged and insulated to keep your feet warm. Sort of like uggs, if they came waterproofed/had a waterproof exterior. Most of my snowboots growing up had soft plasticky exteriors of some kind.
