So after four books, Anne and Gilbert finally get married! It's interesting to me that Montgomery doesn't give them an unqualified happy ending--they lose their much wanted first baby. And it's not like there isn't a lot of other stuff going on here--all the stuff with Leslie and Owen, Anne befriending various townspeople in her usual way, etc. I do wonder what Montgomery's motivations were for that particular plot point.
I like how she captures the ordinary yet very real disappointments and sadness that people experience. I always cry a little when they lose the first baby.
I love the descriptions of their house of dreams. It just sounds so homey and nice.
Captain Jim is such a great character. I love how Anne helps him with his life book. The First Mate is a great name for a cat!
I like Cornelia too. She's so funny. To most people the difference between Methodists and Presbyterian is so small, and yet it's really important to her. Still she's such a good-hearted generous person.
I'm always a little disappointed that Anne stops writing. And she seems to put her writing down a lot, describing it as just some silly fancies. I understand her new commitments as a wife. And in many ways L.M.Montgomery was quite progressive, but still it always makes me a little sad. What do you all think?

On the other hand--more lovable cats!

Captain Jim always makes me cry! He is so proud of his stories and his lost love. And the First Mate - such a great name for a big purry cat.
Montgomery writes the best unconventional love stories. Leslie and Owen are why this is my favorite of the Anne series.
