Pan's Labyrinth finally opened here, so of course we had to go see it opening night! I was glad that Pinky had mentioned it was "brutal", so we weren't expecting some sweet little fairy tale land. More of a dark, muddy fairy tale land in the midst of Spanish battlefields in 1944. At any rate, 2/3 of us loooved it and hope it wins all its Oscars; the final 1/3 wasn't into it at all, but as we pointed out, he didn't have to come see it with us, and this certainly wasn't any darker than Children of Men (which he apparently liked for its action sequences).
Next time we're seeing a comedy, after all this!
Oh, but here's something funny. We of course just had our book discussion group on The Namesake this week, and there was a poster for the movie version that's coming out this spring, so we were chatting about that as the lights went down . . . and the very first preview was for The Namesake! It looks excellent. The trailer actually made me cry, which shamefully was not a first.

we saw that last night, too. was it packed in FLA? we went to the 10:15, which was nearly full because the 8:50 sold out. pretty cool that a non-blockbuster looks to be a hit.
not a huge fan of the genre (i.e. fables), but i thought it was well done in spite of my personal preferences. definitely better than children of men and babble (yes, that misspelling was intentional). score one for del toro against his mexican bretheren.
It was way more packed than we were expecting--the theater seats over two hundred and was almost full for the 7:25 showing. There was a huge crowd waiting to see it when we left--which was kind of funny, as one of us was loudly discussing his dislike of the ending as we waded through them. Hopefully they weren't too spoiled!
how funny - we saw Children of Men, and then Pan's Labyrinth...I've had enough dark movies! We did see Volver this weekend - not "light" per se, but really wonderful and not a downer at all.
ooh, thanks for saying that about volver--i love almodovar, but wasn't sure if i wanted to see this one enough to talk someone into going with me. now i will!
it was really good - i have a newfound respect for Penelope Cruz, even though they padded her ass :-)
